Dr. Osnat Melamed is an associate scientist and a staff physician with the Addictions Division at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), working both at the Nicotine Dependence and COMPASS clinics. She is also an assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto.
Following completion of her family medicine residency, she continued into two post- graduate fellowships with the University of Toronto in Addiction Medicine and Medical Psychiatry. In 2019-2020, she participated in the TUTOR-Primary Health Care research program, which is run by the University of Western Ontario and focuses on interdisciplinary primary care research. In 2022-2023, she was named an AMS Healthcare Fellow in Compassion and Artificial Intelligence for her work on smoking cessation chatbots.
In 2023, she received the New Investigator award from the Department of Family and Community Medicine, at the University of Toronto.
Areas of Research
Dr. Melamed is an early-career investigator at the INTREPID lab at CAMH with research interests in tobacco addiction and the intersections between chronic medical conditions and mental illness.
Dr. Melamed is a member in an interdisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians from the University of Toronto and CAMH who develop AI-based chatbots to aid smokers in quitting.
She has a particular interest in the use of digital tools such as chatbots and smartphone apps for the delivery of personalized content to aid in smoking cessation. With seed funding support from the WomenmindTM foundation, she co-developed a smartphone app with gender-informed content to support smoking reduction and cessation in women.
