Dr. Mounira Banasr is scientist and leads the preclinical unit of the Neurobiology of Depression and Aging Program at CAMH. She is also an assistant professor in Psychiatry and in Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Banasr received her PhD in neuroscience from the University of Sciences of Luminy, France, in 2004. She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Yale University in one of the top psychiatry departments in the world, in the laboratory of Dr. Ronald Duman, where she became a Junior Scientist in 2008.
Areas of Research
Dr. Banasr's research focuses on the study of the behavioural, cellular and molecular changes involved with the pathophysiology and treatment of major depressive disorders and stress-related illnesses. Her primary interest resides in the investigation of the key molecules, cells and pathways implicated in the expression of the symptoms of depression. She anticipates that this approach will provide new therapeutic leads for the development of more selective and efficient drugs for the treatment of depression.
