Program Overview
The Opioid Dependence Treatment Certificate Program has been developed to prepare physicians, pharmacists, nurses and counsellors and other practitioners to provide a comprehensive range of services for people who access services for opioid use. The certificate program comprises a core course and several elective courses. All the courses are accredited by the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto for continuing medical education credits.
Requirements
To complete the certificate, individuals must complete the core course (Opioid Use Disorder Treatment) and three additional elective courses. The courses can be completed in any order. Participants who are not pursuing the certificate have the option of taking elective courses independently.
Core Course (required):
Opioid Use Disorder Treatment (OUDT) Course (20 credit/hours)
Elective Courses:
Buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder - (13.5 credit/hours)
Concurrent Disorders in Primary Care Online - (9.5 credit/hours)
Medication, Interactions and Substance Use - (20.0 Mainpro+ learning hours)
Motivational interviewing MI foundations of practice
Motivational interviewing Introduction and Application
Recovery-Oriented Approach (21.5 credit/hours)
Learning Objectives
After completing the ODT Certificate program, participants will be able to:
- describe the fundamental concepts of opioid use disorder
- choose treatment approaches and modalities for patients with opioid use disorder
- implement safe prescribing, dosing and dispensing of opioid agonist therapy (OAT) medications
- enhance clinical skills, including assessment, counselling, pharmacotherapy and relapse prevention
- discuss issues related to specific populations treated with OAT
- screen for both substance use and mental health disorders to identify concurrent disorders
- explain how psychoactive drugs and prescribed medications interact with mental health disorders
- demonstrate interprofessional collaboration when providing care to patients treated with OAT
- engage patients in treatment using a collaborative approach that follow motivational interviewing principles.
Delivery Method
This program uses a blended delivery format that includes online asynchronous and synchronous components.

This program is held under the auspices of the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto.
