Course Overview
This course prepares physicians, specialist physicians and psychiatrists to integrate evidence-based MI into their practice and use MI strategies throughout a patient’s process of change. The course is based on the principles detailed in Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change and Grow, 4th edition (2023), by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick.

- Each participant will conduct two live simulated patient (SP) consultation sessions
- An experienced MI coach will provide real-time feedback and coaching
- Live, online, interactive group learning labs
- Authentic patient-care scenarios, which form the basis of contextual learning.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define and critique MI, as well as discuss its purpose, how it is used and how it works
- Establish relationships with patients that are characterized by partnership, acceptance, compassion and evocation
- Use OARS (open questions, affirmations, reflective statements and summaries) to identify and explore issues to be addressed in a patient consultation
- Provide information and advice in a style consistent with MI
- Elicit, reinforce and strengthen change talk and respond to sustain talk in a style consistent with MI
- Apply the four tasks of MI in simulated patient consultation sessions
- Analyze practice experience, identify practice gaps and implement changes to clinical practice.
